Eclipse Rhythm (Mocap 3D Moving-Image Work), 2023

Eclipse Rhythm explores the moment when self-awareness becomes so intense that the world beyond the self begins to disappear. Chance, circumstance, external support and wider systems remain present, yet fall outside the frame of perception.
A motion-captured dancer moves through a shifting CGI environment in which body, space and image continually affect one another. Psychological tension is translated into rhythm, repetition and spatial distortion, turning the digital environment into an extension of the performer’s unstable inner world.
The work began my ongoing investigation into how technological mediation shapes attention, self-perception and judgement. I developed the concept, script, motion-capture direction, CGI environment, animation and final work. The choreography was created in collaboration with Manman, a dancer from Goldsmiths
Spatial Studies
A series of CGI environments developed to translate inward attention into spatial repetition, distortion and enclosure. Each scene explores a different relationship between the performer, the frame and the surrounding system.
The motion-capture process translated embodied performance into the movement structure of the CGI work, connecting the dancer’s physical gestures with the film’s constructed psychological space.
